How it started

Our Story

Three decades of smoke, sauce, and serious hardware.

In 1987, Mike Clark and Bud Furguson started planning their first-ever BBQ contest. Success was nearly instant — Grand Champion at the Black River Festival BBQ Cook-off in 1989 and 1990.

In 1993, they won Grand Champion in Shoulder at the Memphis in May World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest, earning a coveted invite to the Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational, where they took 1st Place in Chicken.

Over eleven years, Mike's team competed across 5 states in nearly 100 contests — placing top ten at Memphis in May six times in nine appearances. In February 2007, after years of catering alongside his son Zach, Mike opened Mike & Zach's BBQ To-Go right here in Poplar Bluff, MO.

Quick answers

Frequently Asked

The things folks ask before they head over.

What are your hours?

We're open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Closed Sunday and Monday — that's when the pits get their rest.

Where are you located?

1906 N Westwood Blvd, Poplar Bluff, MO 63901. Plenty of parking. Give us a call at (573) 712-2626 if you can't find us.

Are you gluten-friendly?

Yes — we're a gluten-friendly kitchen. Many of our items work well for guests with gluten sensitivities, and we take preparation precautions when asked. Please let us know when you order and we'll walk you through what's safe.

Do you accommodate alpha-gal allergies?

We do our best to accommodate guests with alpha-gal. Our chicken is cooked so that direct drippings from pork and beef won't touch it, and we'll take extra care if you let us know when ordering. That said, chicken is cooked on shared racks that may have held other meats on previous cooks — we don't have a dedicated cooker for chicken. Guests with mild sensitivities are often fine; those with severe reactions should weigh that before ordering.

Do you sell your sauce and rub? Can you ship?

Yes! Our Grand Champion BBQ Sauce (16 oz) and Dry Rub & Seasoning (8, 16, or 32 oz) are both available. Stop by the restaurant, or call (573) 712-2626 to order. We ship anywhere in the United States. Same recipe that won us Memphis in May.

Do you do catering?

Yes — weddings, graduations, company picnics, family reunions, you name it. We've fed groups from 20 to 500+, and everything is smoked fresh the day of your event. Call (573) 712-2626 for the fastest response and a free quote.

What kind of wood do you smoke with?

Maple wood, low and slow. It's the same recipe that won us Grand Champion in Shoulder at the Memphis in May World Championship.

What's your most popular dish?

Two ways to answer that. The Famous BBQ Nachos get talked about more than anything else — smoked pork, nacho chips, beans, cheese, and our championship sauce. But the classic BBQ sandwich with maple-smoked pork is the workhorse, and the Katie Tator (loaded baked potato) has its own loyal following.

Have you really won championships?

Yep. Memphis in May World Championship Grand Champion in Shoulder (1993). Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational, 1st place in Chicken. Plus Grand Champion finishes at Arkansas State and Black River Festival, and 1st Place in Ribs at Murphysboro Illinois State. Over eleven years on the competition circuit, we cooked at nearly 100 contests across 5 states.

Do you have family-size bundles for carry out?

Several. Pork bundles start at $19.99 (1 lb pork with sides, buns, sauce) and run up to $55.99 for a 2 lb pack with three 16 oz sides. Rib bundles run $28.99 to $57.99. Whole maple-smoked chicken with sides is $18.99. Full bundle list is on the menu.

How long has Mike & Zach's been around?

The competition team goes back to 1987, when Mike Clark and Bud Furguson started cooking contests. The restaurant — Mike & Zach's BBQ To-Go — opened in Poplar Bluff in February 2007 after years of catering. We're family-owned and have been at it ever since.
